4 Steps To Turn Your Business Green

More and more of your customers care about companies that are going green. Find out how you can start your business on the road to being green with these four easy steps.

Who says it’s not easy being green? It seems there is more and more focus on environment protection, especially from a business perspective. Becoming ‘neutral’ in your environmental impact and having a small carbon footprint have become priorities. Green is the color we have given our environmental efforts, but is it easy to go green and form a green business strategy?

With so much focus on going green and having a sustainable business, there is therefore a demand for green products. Not only can you purchase products and equipment that require less energy, you can also from easy policies that save energy. Here are four easy steps you can take to help make your business a sustainable green business.

  1. Purchase Green Energy

Electricity is generated by spinning turbines and generators through many methods such as steam, water, and wind. While electricity is combined and shared through common power grids, you cannot use any one specific type of electrical power unless you hook up directly to a source such as a private wind turbine.

Most electricity is produced by power plants that create air pollution. However, more effort is being put into developing and installing clean energy devices such as wind, solar, and water generators. You can help promote these clean forms of energy production by purchasing clean power or green certificates through your power company. To be completely ‘neutral,’ buy as many kilowatt hours (kWh) as you use. For instance, if your business consumes 20,000 kWh a year, purchase 20,000 in clean energy certificates to go totally green.

  2. Consume Less Energy

You can help make a sustainable green business not only by purchasing green power, but by using less power. Here are a few tips:

    • Turn all lights, computers, and equipment off when your business is closed.
    • Install cost-saving motion sensors that turn lights off when no one is around.
    • Use fluorescent bulbs in all your lighting fixtures.

These are just a few ideas. Brainstorm other ideas for your business on how you can save energy with a green business strategy.

  3. Install Green Products

Purchase green products that you can use in your business. Look for Energy Star equipment that not only saves electricity usage, but also provides your business with tax savings. Try products like air conditioners and heaters. Don’t forget even your bathrooms can be swapped with water-saving toilets.

  4. Recycle

No green business strategy is complete without a recycling plan. Tons of waste products are produced each year by even the smallest businesses. Make policies that will reuse and recycle scrap paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, metal, etc. All efforts you put into recycling reusable materials create that much less in a landfill.

Making a green business is becoming big business, and you can jump on the bandwagon while helping Mother Earth. Touting your green efforts is also a positive marketing strategy and shows your dedication to a sustainable green business. Follow these tips and find out other ways you can become more ‘green’ in your business practices.
