Often, confidence is what holds a person back from starting a small business. Too many fears, concerns and unknowns can paralyze you as a leader. There’s a fix for this. Follow these 5 steps on how to become more confident.

How to Become More Confident

Small steps can create big results in learning how to become more confident. Try these ideas for 30 days:

1. Start with your posture

It’s probably not the first step you were expecting, but think about it: when you sit upright with your back straight, how do you feel? Usually, you’ll feel more alert. The moment your shoulders start to lower and your back slouches, you lose that feeling of attentiveness.

2. Smile and say hello to strangers

When you’re at the grocery store, be the first to say hi to the cashier. If you catch someone’s eye as you walk by, say hi and smile. Smiles are contagious. When they smile back, you’ll feel good and that feeling will help build confidence.

3. Donate your time

Find an opportunity to volunteer and work with others. Giving of yourself creates a stronger sense of purpose, again something that builds your confidence.

4. Keep a gratitude journal

Get a small spiral notebook and keep it next to your bed. This is your gratitude journal. Before you sleep at night, write down the date and one entry, just a little something about your day that you’re thankful for. It can be as simple as “I’m thankful for my health (or family, or friends, or the opportunity to volunteer today).”

5. Take an Imagination Day Regularly

Every few months, make a note on your calendar to spend time thinking about how you want your life to be. It’s important to put this imagination day on your calendar. It can be just a few hours of time with a notebook in a quiet place outside of your home or office, perhaps a cafe or hotel lobby. Take stock of where you are and where you want to be.

30 Days Makes a Habit

When you do these things, you’ll likely find that not only do you feel better about yourself (more confident), but you’ll see that others are more attracted to you and want to be around you.

Knowing how to become more confident works is one thing, but it only works when you apply these techniques. Don’t start and stop. Keep it up for 30 days, which is how long it takes to train your brain a new habit. (Read The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg – Amazon affiliate link).

Give it a try for a month and see how you feel. Keep smiling!
