Apple’s new iPad… good for business?

Amidst much fanfare, Apple has introduced the 9.7 inch iPad. But is it practical for small business use?

On January 27, 2010, the world saw yet another device introduced by Apple that may change the way we do business. Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPad, which is essentially a deluxe version of the iPhone without the phone. The iPad is capable of surfing the net on 3G networks, but will there be uses for the iPad for small business?

The iPad looks like an evolution of our favorite childhood toy, the Etch-A-Sketch. Only half an inch thick and weighing 1.5 pounds, the iPad has a 9.7 inch LED screen and can be carried and used practically anywhere. Like the iPhone, the iPad is a touch device that connects with a 3G internet network, runs apps designed for the device, and can also act as a laptop computer.

The Benefits of the iPad

Your small business and iPad can work together. Already, CIOs of big business are salivating at the potential of the iPad and its tablet feature. First, your small business and iPad can benefit from the obvious use – internet connection. You have the ability to check email anywhere you go and stay in communication with business associates and partners.

However, besides the internet, you now have a tool that can be used for sales presentations. The iPhone can work great as a presentation tool, but the screen is too small and is impractical. Now, your small business and iPad can work together to give dazzling presentations without dragging heavy projection equipment. In addition, you can save time on meeting room setup.

Additionally, use the iPad to access network databases from anywhere. Your sales force can bring up customer information with just a few touches, make a new order, and track an order – all with a screen that is much bigger and more useful than iPhone.

Great Uses for Small Businesses

But what if I run a small retail business, you ask? Retail small business and iPad can work together too. Use the iPad as a tool to perform inventory counts or to re-order merchandise and supplies. Your iPad could also be a great promotional tool for your customers. Create a short demonstration video and run it on your thin iPad next to a stack of special merchandise on sale.

And don’t forget the other practical computing options for the iPad and small business. You will be able to buy a separate keyboard and stand for your iPad, turning it into a practical laptop computer. The iPad display makes it ideal for eliminating paper in your office as well. Use it to store your manuals, invoices, and sales literature.

In addition, the iPad touch feature makes it useful for brainstorming. Create designs and write down business ideas like a “back of a napkin” tool.

The personal computer has been changing the way we do business ever since it was introduced. Now, the iPad has taken the personal computer to a new evolutional level. Your small business and iPad have an opportunity to make beautiful music together and make your small business easier to run.
