The most effective way to get help for your business

A couple of years ago, a “new” book and DVD came out called The Secret about power of the law of attraction. It is a modern day version of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and other self-help books that illustrate how to achieve your personal goals. To reach a destination you must first see yourself as already having arrived (paraphrased from one of my favorite books, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach).

All of the technical information you would ever need to be successful is out there. Books and seminars can show you marketing strategies, business techniques, and other details to educate you. But the key ingredient, the most critical aspect to being successful or gaining access to the people or information you need, is yourself. It lies within your own resourcefulness, which speaks directly to how badly you want something. If you see yourself getting it, you will indeed get it.

Why am I writing about this? Every week, our MoreBusiness.com small business help site gets questions from people who elect not to read or help themselves to the myriad of information available on our site or others. It’s not hard to find. For example, if you wanted to know how to incorporate, just search on “incorporating” or something similar to find succinct material on the topic.

If what you need to know is not online, that’s when it’s time to call in a consultant or expert, not before. The added benefit of doing your research online is that you educate yourself on the right questions to ask. If you end up paying a consultant, just knowing more about the topic will save you time and therefore cash. If you are getting consulting services pro bono, be sure to do your homework first. You will make the most of the time you have with the person who is helping you.
