Career Change Guide: Changing Your Career Successfully

Most people find that they need to change their careers from time to time; in fact, studies suggest that the average person will switch careers at least seven times during their lives.

Because so many people are changing their careers, and doing it often, there is a wealth of career change help out there for anyone looking for it, and that means you.

We have put together a bit of a career change guide for you, to help you get started in the search for a job which will truly be of interest to you.

Find a Job That Suits You

The first step, of course, is finding out what type of job you would really be interested in doing.

Many career change guides and materials include tests that can help a person figure out which areas he or she is most likely to be strong in.

They will ask questions that will help you discover your personality type and ideal work environment, and many go on to suggest careers that will be fulfilling, based on the compilation of that information.

Check Out the Feasibility

Once you have shortlisted a set of choices for changing your career, you need to check out just how likely it is that you can get a job in one of the careers on your list.

You will probably want to start locally, just so you don’t disrupt your lifestyle too much.

On the other hand, if you have some wanderlust or if you can’t find good jobs in your most likely career in your current town, the Internet has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for those looking to switch jobs.

If local searches don’t pan out, you can go state, national, international, even global. It all depends on the details of the job.

Don’t just look for positions available at this point of the search. You should also look at the potential for openings in the future.

If it seems as though there is no employment market for your ideal career, don’t despair yet. All jobs need to be filled at some point; your task is to make your candidacy as appealing as possible.

With good credentials, even hard-to-secure jobs can be gained.

Training

Once you have selected a career, it’s time to start the training you will need in order to qualify for that job.

This can mean anything from on the job training to a few night classes in business start-ups, to having to go to university full time for a number of years.

Whatever training you may have to undergo, always remember why you are doing it. If you are worried about money, it is possible to secure loans as you take training, particularly if that training is at an upper education level.

Changing your career is entirely possible, but in order to get yourself truly out of the rut you feel you’re in it is important to look ahead. Find a career that will satisfy you in every way for a number of years, and then go for it.
