Winter Tips for Warm-Blooded Business Travelers

Traveling during winter can be a chilling experience -- here are some tips to warm your heart.

For those who live in warm climes, business travel to strange countries and cities during the cold winter months can be a chilling experience. Some basic preparations and precautions are called for.

While carrying enough warm clothing is an obvious requirement, also make sure to include soft, comfortable inner garments. Wear layers to stay warm. Pack a couple of 100 percent cotton T-shirts. They’re breathable, warm and flexible — great for layering — and they can double as nightshirts.

Not being used to wearing a hat, you might casually step out bare-headed. Remember that your head is an escape valve for more than 50 percent of your body heat. Keep your head and ears covered.

Carry gloves or mittens and remember to wear them outdoors. Glove liners are a help too; grasping a cold metal handrail with your bare hand could be a painful experience. Also avoid wearing metal watchstraps and jewelry, as they can feel very cold against your skin.

Be sure to pack thick-soled shoes and warm woolen socks. Light, elegant, thin-soled shoes are strictly for the tropics. Thermal socks can help keep your feet cozy at night.

You’d be surprised how dry your skin can get in cold weather. Apply cold cream or moisturizer on your face and hands regularly. Use a lip balm to avoid chapped lips. Drink plenty of fluids, but try to avoid caffeine as it can be dehydrating.

Eat hearty breakfasts; you’ll need plenty of high-energy foods because you burn more calories in the cold.

Finally, if you rent a car, ensure that the heater and defroster work. Check the tires. Make sure they are properly inflated and the tread is in good condition. Driving on icy roads can be hazardous — don’t take unnecessary risks.
