Unsatisfied Employees? Increase Your Employee Satisfaction!

Anyone who has been in business for any length of time knows that keeping a good employee is much less expensive and time consuming than having to find, hire and train a new employee.

It is important to keep employees satisfied in their jobs. Taking a little care can go a long way in the effort to keep them at your company.

Not Always Money

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that every employee who leaves one job for another did so to earn a higher salary.

Job satisfaction ranks high on the list of reasons why people leave their jobs.

Here are some tips to keep employee satisfaction high and your employees feeling valued.

Burn Out

Often, when a person is recognized as being a talented employee, more and more tasks are added to their plate.

While giving an employee additional responsibility is a good thing, be careful not to give them so many tasks that they feel burnt out.

Underutilized

On the opposite end of the spectrum is when the employee feels that they are not being used enough.

This often results in feelings of frustration and contributes to unsatisfied employees, which is never a good thing in the workplace.

Cliques

Take special care to ensure that newer employees are not made to feel like outsiders.

It may not be something that is done on purpose, but if the rest of your employees have been there for 10 years, it would be easy to see how a new employee could feel like they’ll never be part of the group (and as a result, never be able to move up).

Can’t Win

Some managers feel the need to follow every “compliment” with the word, “but”.

For example, “You sold 20 units? That’s great, but I was really hoping for 40 this week.” While pushing employees to do their best is fine, be careful not to give them the feeling that nothing that they do is quite good enough.

Separate your praise from your counseling, so that employees will know you do value the good work they do.

Internal Conflict

One bad attitude can destroy the entire atmosphere of an office. Work to nip bad attitudes in the bud.

It’s not easy, but it is bad for your business to allow negativity to take over your office.

Many employees have quit a job and taken one that pays less in order to avoid a toxic environment.

No Upward Mobility

It is not always possible to provide employees with a chance to move up, but when there is a position open, always try to promote from within.

This shows the other employees that hard work and loyalty really can pay off.

Not Being Heard

Obviously, you will not be able to implement every suggestion made by employees.

On the other hand, if you never implement any of their ideas, they are going to feel as though their opinion does not matter and that they are not heard.

It doesn’t have to be about major business decisions, but being listened to can be a big factor in employee satisfaction.

It could be something as simple as what kind of coffee to make. Hear your employees and, when possible, show them that their opinion counts.

It doesn’t take much time to help your employees feel valued. Make that small investment, so that you can keep employees satisfied.
