  • North Carolina does not have a single comprehensive business license that will cover all types of businesses.
    • Check with the North Carolina Business ServiCenter to identify the state licensing requirements for your business.

How to Get a Business License in North Carolina:

  • If you plan to hire at least one employee, contact Internal Revenue Service to get an Employer ID Number (EIN), and to request your w-4, SS-4, Circular E and Publication 334 forms.
  • Register your business entity with the State.
    • To register a sole proprietorship or general partnership fill out the Assumed Name Registration form and take to the office of the County Register of Deeds where your business is conducted.
    • To file a Corporation, LLC or Limited Partnership visit the Secretary of State Corporations Division to fill out and submit the necessary forms.
